Radiology 2000 Congress Hong Kong

The most important radiological meeting of the year, Radiology 2000 Congress Hong Kong was held in Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre from 10th to 13th August. Over 500 participants from Asia, North America, Europe and Australia attended the meeting. International renowned speakers from all parts of the world including the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, Italy, Sweden and Singapore delivered excellent lectures, covering nearly all aspects of radiology, radiation oncology, and nuclear medicine.

The opening ceremony was officiated by Ms Shelley Lee, the Director of Home Affairs. This was followed by series of lectures and workshops. The Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, one of the most distinguished research institution in the United States, held series of lectures conducted by pre-eminent speakers, each of whom have made unique achievement in their own subspecialty. Dr. Jeffrey Galvin talked on chest radiology, Dr.Pablo Ros on radiology of liver, spleen and pancreas, Dr. Mark Murphey on musculoskeletal radiology. Through these enlightening lectures, local radiologists gained new ideas, views, and fresh matters of thoughts.

 

The number of speakers from Mainland China was less in number but equal in weight. Prof. Dai Jian-ping, the president of Chinese Radiology Society, gave a splendid lecture concerning neuroradiology. The most highly esteemed radiologist in China, Prof. Li Guozhen, who was regarded by all Mainland Chinese radiologists as “grandmother” also attended the meeting.

 

Local speakers, including the prominent specialists from other medical specialties were also invited to give lectures. Among them, Mr. James Tien, a former Legislative Councillor was invited to lecture on image building in People session.  

As in previous years, there were scientific proffered papers sessions and a poster exhibition. Over 30 free papers were presented and  over 40 posters were displayed. Dr. Lisa Wong from QMH, Dr. WH Ng from PWH and Dr Ray TT Chan of Clinical Oncology, QMH won the Young Presenter Awards.

The Cultural Evening on 11th August was held in Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts.  There were photo exhibition, photo album and Chinese cultural entertainment. All the participants were deeply impressed by the fortune telling, Chinese Tea Demonstration and Tasting, and the calligraphy works. The Hong Kong MA orchestra gave an equally successful performance of classical orchestral works by J.S. Bach and Benjamin Britten.

 

The Congress dinner took place in Pacific Rim of Hong Kong Convention Centre on 12th August. The atmosphere was warm and delight. Every guest enjoyed the banquet with live band performance and Karaoke.

 

The closing ceremony ended the three days congress in the applause of all audience. The success of meeting would not take place without the toils and labours of all members of organizing committee, and other voluntary workers. Through whole year of planning and preparatory work, they have accomplished and fulfilled a mission. The applause of all the audience had already bestowed the reward worthy of their service. The Hong Kong people have again shown the world what we can achieve.
